|| An Absolutely Remarkable Thing ||

You know those TV shows, the ones that you know are really kinda shitty, but you love them anyway and will always watch, no matter how terrible it gets? I think I found the book alternative!

I know this sounds like a negative point, but crappy TV shows are my favourite, and I loved this book! It’s An absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green and it wasn’t what I was expecting, but I still had a great time reading it. The characters are okay, the idea is okay, the plot is… Okay… But I still found it extremely enjoyable and was totally hooked, like I didn’t want to put it down. Does this make sense to anyone other than me?

This wasn’t a massively action packed, alien-robot invasion, bad-ass sci-fi/fantasy book (although it had its moments) like I thought it might be, but I liked that, I appreciate it when an author does something a bit different and Hank Green succeeded in providing a different voice in a huge genre.

The narrative of the story is something I really enjoyed, it’s written from the point of view of our main character April May, looking back on the events that unfolded after finding a giant robot in the middle of New York. Its a story about handling fame, romance and friendship and its written from the perspective of a snarky, sarcastic, not overly likeable, girl in her twenties. But that was fantastic, you don’t need a perfect goody-two shoes character to make a book good, you need characters with flaws and issues they need to work through, because that’s what makes a character more believable and real.

Overall this was a fantastic book, yes it had some faults, the ending wasn’t the greatest, but it was an entertaining read and something new, using social media and YouTube as an aid to get the story across, and it really worked. I’m so happy to see Hank getting his moment and showing the book world what he has to offer and I’m excited to see what his writing future holds, I mean, I’m hoping it’ll hold a sequel because it could do with one!

If you’ve read this please let me know what you thought of it in the comments or on Instagram! Love Amy x
